For those who are not familiar with special needs children or adults, it is often difficult to truly understand the road they travel. Disability simulation activities give the participant a chance to “walk a mile in someone else’s shoes.” However, please note that these exercises will only give the participant a brief glimpse at one generalized aspect of any given struggle.
The following is an activity to glimpse the world of Auditory Impairment.
Wearing a pair of ear plugs or ear muffs, watch a television show with the sound turned down low and another white noise playing in the background. White noise might include a fan running or a radio turned to a frequency with only static.
- Firstly, were you able to clearly understand the TV dialogue?
- How much were you able to comprehend?
- Finally, how much frustration were you feeling after 5 minutes? After 15 minutes?
