For those who are not familiar with special needs children or adults, it is often difficult to truly understand the road they travel. Disability simulation activities give the participant a chance to “walk a mile in someone else’s shoes.” However, please note that these exercises will only give the participant a brief glimpse at one generalized aspect of any given struggle.
The following is an activity to glimpse the world of Specific Learning Disability.
Directions: You have 1 minute to read the 24 colors below, NOT the words.
- Firstly, write down your feelings as you were trying to complete the task.
- Did you finish with at least 70% accuracy?
- Why not? Try again.
- Our students are given many tasks per school day that may seem impossible and then required to complete with 70% accuracy.
- As in this activity, the brain knows what to do but has to slow down to do the activity correctly.
