Why would a parent want a struggling child assessed with cognitive and achievement testing? Often parents themselves struggle with taking that first step for several reasons:
- I don’t want my child labeled.
- Special education would stigmatize my student.
- It’s embarrassing to have a child with an issue at school.
However, getting an evaluation will often provide relief for not only the student but also for the family. Getting to the root of the issues can provide both home and school with interventions and accommodations to compensate for any compromised cognitive and/or achievement areas.
Understanding the challenges that a student is facing and providing targeted support can make a world of difference. We sometimes tell our families that this is no different than having your physician assess a medical condition to provide relief.
Many of our clients touch base with us years later to share the academic successes they have accomplished after an evaluation. Thorough assessment can provide vital information that impacts the course of a child’s life. As our friend “Benjamin” told us, “School is now much gooder!”
