Special education students who self-advocate empower themselves to become independent adults.
Tips and Techniques:
- Use a parent or teacher to role play unfamiliar scenarios. For example, role play a college interview or how to ask for help from a teacher or professor.
- Help your student list strengths and weaknesses. Then brainstorm ways in which those weaknesses can be accommodated.
- Encourage your child to ask questions and request help.
- Engage in problem-solving skills at home. If you see your child struggling with homework, hone in on where the issues are and work on a plan together so that he or she can better articulate needed accommodations with the teacher.
